Review
‘The New Friends’ is a dark, tightly plotted psychological thriller that puts the allure of wealth and a lifestyle made of dreams under the spotlight! It is very easy to be seduced by the idea of a rich life, where money is no object and you get to go on dream holidays, very easy in fact. Most of us lust after more. But what if those aspirations have meant you have been picked out and played with?!
This was such a good book to read last week whilst I was on holiday by the pool! Pretending that I live in 5 star luxury and wear great clothes all the time. Normal life is sweats and no makeup! So I got the point of this premise instantly. Jamie and Becky were me and my husband and I got insanely angry when the reveals started to come along! There is quite a bit of social commentary set within the narrative and I really enjoyed that. It's hard to make friends as an adult and when you are suddenly thrown together with people with whom you click, there is a tendency to rush a relationship and believing they are the bee's knees. Plus, the whole obsession with ‘keeping up with jones’ , showing your ‘best life’ on social media. And the desire to want to show this and experience this. But really is it all what it is made out to be?
It is safe to say I devoured this book, along with the margaritas. It's definitely an engaging thriller. This was my first Daniel Hurst book but I don't think it will be my last!
