Shadows & Magic is the addictive first book in The Younglings YA paranormal fantasy series. If you like fun characters, witty banter, and well-paced action, then you’ll adore Helena M Craggs’s coming-of-age adventure.

Review

‘The Younglings: Shadows and Magic’ is a brilliant piece of YA fiction! I have seen lots of others love this series and now I know why. It's pithy, funny and reminds me of the group from Buffy - everyone has a purpose and everyone feels like an integral part of the team. I'm already dying to read the second book!

Quinn Carter is trying to balance his dual nature as he has just found out that he is half demon. He learns that his estranged father is a demon king and is struggling with unrequited love for his best friend Eve who happens to be a half Angel. After discovering a gift to see ghosts and realising that there are more supernatural beings in his school they band together to form the Spook Crew. When Eve is threatened by a group of vampires they have to go on the attack to save her and will they get there in time…

I really enjoyed this fun and fast-paced read! I flew through this book and that is a testament to its writing and brilliant characters. I really loved Eve and Quinn and their ‘will they won't they’ story was fun to read. Quinn and Eve come across as an authentic portrayal of normal teenagers (apart from the supernatural element of course!) and that helps it become a great coming-of-age tale as well. The world-building was spot on and it was very easy to get caught up in the story. All the characters were well-formed with very distinct personalities and it was lovely to see them form amazing bonds with each other. Once the introduction stage of the book passes the author really packs in the action and the tension ramps up to a rather big conclusion! Roll on book two.

Let me know if you pick this one up!
