Chris is a writer based in UK, who has had a number of short stories published over the past few years, blogs on a regular basis and occasionally reviews books and audios for the British Fantasy Society.
Chris wrote a short pop memoir which was published in 2011 and went down well with its core-audience. It continues to sell at a steady rate to this day.
Chris also plays bass guitar and performs random acts of web and graphic design for a diverse selection of clients.
Review
This was some trip of a book! It feels as if it has emerged from the music of Jimi Hendrix / Black Flag / Tool / David Bowie! I adored this once it got going as it was insanely weird but elegantly plotted, oozed with realism and the characterisation was spot on.
Genie is a pop star and seemingly the whole world is at her feet. But when her boyfriend dies she begins to realise that life isn’t as good as it seems. Her last partner Wendi also died a few years back and Genie hadn’t been able to grieve for her properly until now. So basically she has a double whammy of grief going on, whilst trying to prove to her music label that everything is okay.
I loved this story. The retrospective snippets into the past - Genie meeting Wendi for the first time, her uni experience, the drugs etc allow the reader to really grasp the characters. But the bits I loved best were those down below as you see both main characters develop and grow. Plus it’s so good damn wacky - but when you base it on, I want to say Greek mythology what do you expect?! All the situations Genie finds herself in are a reflection on particular Greek myths and I really enjoyed that. It gave the narrative a bit a gravitas and allowed you to see the other side of Genie, especially because she was studying classics at uni. Wendi I just think might be a female version of the author - well the hair for sure! However, I found her struggle and being unable to articulate how she was feeling to those she was closest too so sad. Please if you are struggling reach out to someone.
