Dark Is The Grave by TG Reid
A dead cop. A damaged detective. A copycat killer on the loose.
When the chief suspect in the notorious Peek-a-boo cop killer case blew himself up, almost taking lead investigator DCI Duncan Bone with him, the psychologically damaged detective thought his days on the force were over. But when another PC is abducted and murdered in the same deranged Peek-a-boo fashion, Bone is persuaded to return to lead the new investigation. But as Bone and his team hunt a copycat killer, and with time running out before yet another cop is slain, Bone’s terrifying past returns to tear open old wounds and push him to very edge of the abyss.
Can DCI Bone end the killing before the killing ends him?

Review
‘Dark is the Grave’ is the debut novel from TG Reid and features DCI Duncan Bone who works out of the Rural Crime Unit at the bottom of the Campies in Scotland. We find him on sick leave as in his previous case the Peek-a-boo killer had damaged him physically and mentally by blowing himself and Bone up in a bomb! But when a USB stick comes to his house which shows a video of another young policewoman in a shallow grave it soon becomes clear he needs to return to work to finish the case he started.
This is such a great start to a new police procedural series. I especially love when they are set in Scotland and even better when in the Glasgow area. It was a dark and gritty plot that captivated me from the start. There were plenty of twists and red herrings and the showdown was great. Bone as a character was complex mainly due to his mental health being damaged leading to him being reckless and volatile. It will be interesting to see how this develops or whether it was due to the emotion the case associated to his depleted mental health.
This was a brilliant start to hopefully a fruitful new series! It is certainly one I can recommend.
