We support a nationwide network of food banks and together we provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.
In the UK, more than 14 million people are living in poverty – including 4.5 million children. We support more than 1,200 food bank centres in the UK to provide a minimum of three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food to people who have been referred in crisis, as well as support to help people resolve the crises they face. Between April 2019 and March 2020, food banks in our network provided a record 1.9 million food supplies to people in crisis, an 18% increase on the previous year and during the coronavirus pandemic food banks have seen need rise even further. You can find out more about the impact of our work during the pandemic in our latest report, available here.
We know it takes more than food to end hunger. That’s why we recently launched our five year strategic plan. We know our goal to end the need for food banks is ambitious, but by working Together for Change, we believe it is achievable.
Review
UnLocked is a brilliant collection of short stories that give you mystery, love, tension, an examination of relationships, to a look at mental health. I can't imagine what it must have been like to launch a debut novel during the lockdown in 2020. The authors must have been so excited but being unable to do the normal book launches etc must have been disappointing. I love that this group of authors came together and formed this support group! I had followed those authors included in this anthology before reading this book and I have even reviewed some of their books before on my blog. They are a diverse bunch and this is reflected in the stories included in UnLocked. Even if some of the stories aren't for you, there will be a couple that will be!
Also, if you pick up this book please note that all profits go to the Trussell Trust which is a brilliant charity. Due to many factors more people are needing to use their services and every penny donated will really help those in need.
I must say that I loved every story in this collection but there were a few which stood out for me. Emma Christie’s story about bobbing in the water snorkelling hit a note as that is something which me and my husband also love to do and we also have a special beach in the Highlands! Not going to tell you where as it's hidden away. Philippa East’s story really packed a punch, I was not expecting something like that at all. I was also excited by Tom Benjamin’s inclusion as I love his Daniel Leicester books!
Let me know if you get this amazing collection of short stories!
